Biloxi is currently best known for its more than a dozen resort-style casinos, open 24 hours-a-day, seven days a week. You’ll find some of the

greatest casino action, from poker machines to card table games, and you'll never have to venture more than steps to some of the greatest, most diverse cuisine, diverse enough to please everyone's palate. Outdoor fun opportunities abound, from championship golf at more than 20 area golf courses, many created by the top designers–Nicklaus, Palmer, and Fazio, to some of the best in and offshore fishing. More than 200 species of fish, from Tarpon and snapper, to Marlin and grouper, are for the angler’s taking. Beauvoir, the Jefferson Davis Home & Presidential Library is also located in Biloxi, while Gulfport is home to CEC & Seabee Memorial Museum, a must for any Navy buff. Biloxi's history spans more than 300 years, with the first permanent settlement established in 1699. In 1763 France ceded French Louisiana, including Biloxi and Gulfport, to Great Britain, The British ruled from 1763 to 1779 followed by Spanish rule from 1779 to 1798, and then in 1811, Biloxi became part of the U. S, as part of the Mississippi Territory and was then formally admitted to the union in 1817.

The Biloxi Lighthouse was built in 1848, and is reputed to be one of the most photographed objects in the South. In the early stages of the

Civil War, nearby Ship Island was captured by Union forces, which led to the Union capture of Biloxi, but no major battles were fought in the area. During the post bellum period, Biloxi once again emerged as a vacation spot, famous for its coastline and incredible fishing. Biloxi's casino history dates back to the 1940s and 1950s. In the early 1960s, Biloxi hotels upgraded their amenities and hired chefs from France and Switzerland in an effort to provide some of the best seafood cuisine in the country.
